Shoprite Deals, Specials & Catalogues

Shoprite is a pioneering and leading South African retailer.

Shoprite is the biggest retailer in South Africa. The company has a 40-year history in the country, with its roots in the Western Cape. Shoprite began as a chain of 8 family-owned grocery stores. In November 1979, Whitey Basson – who was a senior manager at Pep Stores – saw an opportunity for Pep to enter the food retailing business and acquired the Shoprite stores from the Rogut family for R1-million. At the time, the stores employed 400 staff. From early on, Shoprite set its sights on serving the middle-to-lower income market. With the vision firmly set, the Shoprite expansion began with the first store outside the Western Cape opening in Hartswater, in the Northern Cape. By 1983, there were 21 Shoprite stores. The Free State became the next location in the chain’s national expansion, and by the time the 33rd store opened in 1986, Shoprite had become a JSE-listed company. Shoprite was the first South African retailer to venture beyond the country’s borders with a store opening in Windhoek, Namibia. Within 30 years of its existence, Shoprite had acquired Checkers as well as the OK group of stores and had a presence in Central Africa, Zambia and Botswana, and the brand’s value offering was entrenched.

Shoprite has grown into a group of retail stores spanning across all income groups; however, the Shoprite stores continue to be the largest part of the holdings and the flagship brand within and outside of South Africa. The stores have expanded their offering from groceries to non-food items, as well as having an on-site liquor store and pharmacy in some of the larger store formats. Shoprite’s store footprint has also made it possible to offer value-added services, such as store-to-store money transfers, that enables customers to send cash to family members anywhere in the country. Having established itself as the largest retailer in Africa, Shoprite has moved on to the Indian sub-continent, with a Shoprite Hyper in Mumbai. Shoprite’s store footprint now stands at 439 stores in South Africa and 138 stores can be found outside SA. The retailer is consistently named as the best retailer, according to customers, having won this category in The Sunday Times Top Brands Survey for five years running.

Having successfully managed and grown Shoprite into a superbrand, Whitey Basson handed over the reigns to Pieter Engelbrecht at the beginning of 2017.
