The Body Shop Deals, Specials & Catalogues

A beauty company with a cosmetics range of more than 1,000 cruelty-free products.

The Body Shop is a chain of stores specialising in skincare, cosmetics and fragrances. The Body Shop was one of the first brands to position itself on natural products that are not tested on animals and the principles of ethical consumerism. The company was founded by Anita Roddick in 1976. Anita had recently returned from a trip to California in the early 1970s where she had visited a store called The Body Shop. The store’s owners – Peggy Short and Jane Saunders – had established their business making and selling naturally-scented soaps and lotions from a car repair garage. When Anita returned to the UK, she opened a store with the same name in Sussex. The business was meant to be a way for Anita to earn extra income for herself and two children while her husband was based in South America for work. Within six months, Anita was opening a second Body Shop store and her husband also became involved in its operations. In 1978, The Body Shop’s first international store opened in Brussels and by 1985, the company was listed. Anita bought the full rights to the company name from Peggy and Jane for $3.5-million the following year.

1989 saw the store’s launch in New Zealand and by the 14th anniversary of The Body Shop’s founding, the company was present in 39 countries. The Body Shop was acquired by L’Oreal in 2006, and the cosmetics multinational has, in turn, accepted an offer from a Brazilian company, Natura, for $1.1-billion in June 2017. In South Africa, The Body Shop brand is franchised to New Clicks Holdings, who have the sole distribution rights. The first local store opened in 2001. There are now 55 stores nationwide and some of the product lines are also sold in select Clicks stores.

The Body Shop doesn’t have any stores in mainland China due to the country’s mandatory policy to test cosmetics on animals.
