An American brand of edgy and fashionable footwear and accessories.

Steve Madden is a brand named after the designer and businessman who founded the company in 1990 for $1,100 when he started selling shoes out of the boot of his car. Steve officially created the company, Steve Madden Ltd, in July 1990. By 1992, the company was publicly listed, but this came with some controversy since the listing was linked to Stratton Oakmont, the brokerage firm founded by Wolf of Wall Street, Jordan Belfort. This period would come back to haunt Steve years later, when in 2001, the SEC filed charges against the shoe designer for stock manipulation and securities fraud. Steve was sentenced to 31 months in prison. The Steve Madden brand lost some value, but rebounded upon Steve’s release in 2006, earning $475-million in revenue that year.

The company designs and manufactures a range of fashionable, quality footwear for men and women, which is a combination of high-street and luxury and targeted at customers aged 16 – 40. The sub-brands that fall under the main Steve Madden brand include Madden Girl, Steve Madden Men and Stevies, among others. The Steve Madden brand recently added jewelry, watches, and fragrance to its portfolio. The company has been marketed through collaborations with celebrities such as Mary-Kate and Ashley Olson, as well as actress, Rachel Bilson. The Steve Madden license for South Africa was acquired by The House of Busby in 2011. Its products are sold through 4 standalone stores in Canal Walk, Eastgate Mall, Fourways Shopping Centre, and Sandton City Mall. The brand is also distributed exclusively in 21 Edgars stores via a branded store-in-store concept. There are currently 120 Steve Madden stores in the US and a further 250 outlets in more than 65 countries worldwide. In 2016, the brand had turnover in excess of $1.4-billion.

The Steve Madden brand was named as Footwear News’ Company of the Year in 2011
