Avon all began in 1886 when travelling book salesperson, David H. McConnel realised that his customers enjoyed his complimentary gift of fragrances more than the books themselves. David then mixed his first fragrances and recruited a sales team of women thirty-two years before UK women had the right to vote, founding his business on community, passion and empowerment. The company was renamed Avon in 1939 after the name and logo had been used on cosmetics for ten years.

In 1995, Avon merged with Justine, a premier South African skincare brand which had been operating since 1973, bringing South Africans products tailored to the lifestyle.

Avon also cares about the non-beauty related well-being of its community and strives to speak out against gender-based violence and advocate for women’s right to financial independence, opening doors for six million independent micro-entrepreneurs across the world. The brand has been active in the fight against breast cancer since 1992. The Avon Foundation for Women has donated over $800 million USD to breast cancer causes. The brand is also behind the iThemba Walkathon.
