Dis-Chem is a leading pharmacy chain established in 1978.

Dis-Chem is a pharmacy retail chain that has been operating in the South African market for almost 40 years. The first Dis-Chem was opened in the southern suburb of Mondeor in Johannesburg, by Ivan Saltzman and his wife, Lynette, who had recently qualified as pharmacists. By 1984, the Saltzmans were opening their second store in Randburg and were starting to expand their product offering beyond medicines. Throughout the 1990s, the business’ success led to more stores being opened in the Johannesburg and Pretoria areas. By 1997, Dis-Chem had introduced a private label range of non-pharmacy products. In the early 2000s, a Dis-Chem store was opened in Cape Town, being the first one outside of the Gauteng province and kicking off the company’s national expansion. The business’ growth was further fuelled by a strategy of buying independent pharmacies and then converting these into Dis-Chem stores – a concept that Dis-Chem then used to enter the Namibian market. Currently, Dis-Chem has a footprint of 108 stores – with 101 of these being in South Africa – and ambitions to have 200 stores operating by 2020.

Dis-Chem is largely credited with introducing the concept of discount pharmacies within the South African retail space. In addition to its pharmacy offering, the stores are also a destination for shoppers looking for cosmetics, perfumes, toiletries and grooming products, as well as specialised medical equipment and even speciality food items suitable for diabetics and other people who have specific dietary requirements. The product range comprises a mix of well-known manufacturer brands and Dis-Chem’s own private labels. In 2013, Dis-Chem branched out of the retail space by acquiring a controlling stake in the CJ Group, thereby establishing the CJ Distribution division within Dis-Chem and becoming a wholesale supplier to third-party retail pharmacies. The dispensary part of the business remains a cornerstone of Dis-Chem, currently accounting for 36% of sales annually. Some stores offer value-added services in the form of a clinic where customers can have a range of health assessments, and parents can schedule checkups for newborns. Dis-Chem currently has a combined total of 170,000 square metres of retail and wholesale space. The company earned a turnover in excess of R17-billion in the 2017 financial year. Dis-Chem supports a number of social causes through the Dis-Chem Foundation, which was established in 2006.

In 2012, Dis-Chem was rated as the number 1 health and wellness brand by the business journal, PMR Africa.
