Red Square is a retailer offering premium cosmetics and fragrance brands.

Red Square is a part of the Edcon Group, one of South Africa’s leading fashion, cosmetics, and homeware retail companies. The group started in 1929 as a few Edgars stores. Following the ousting of one of it’s founding directors, Sydney Press, in the 1980s, Edgars reinvented itself under the leadership of then-CEO, Vic Hammond, leading to a decade of exceptional growth. It was during another massive restructuring that the Red Square brand was born, beginning as a store format that Edgars created in 1996. The idea was to consolidate Edgars’ cosmetics department and brand it under a single umbrella. The first Red Square stores existed within larger Edgars stores. Red Square turned out to be a perfect fit for Edcon, with the self-service counters and ability to test makeup and perfumes, as well as professional beauty advisors being a hit with customers. The format thrived to the extent that Red Square became a brand in its own right and standalone stores were opened to better serve their target market of middle to upper-income consumers.

Red Square aims to be at the cutting edge of the high-end beauty and fragrance market in South Africa. To this end, the store’s buyers source premium ranges of international cosmetics brands that they introduce to the local market. As an exclusive stockist, Red Square’s goal is to make brands like Radical Skincare and Benefit from the US; Sampar from France; Greek brands Korres and Kings & Queens; and Greenland from the Netherlands, among others, accessible to South African consumers at the same price as they would cost overseas. Following research findings that showed customer uptake of online shopping, the Red Square online store was launched in 2013. In addition to being a point of sale, Red Square also uses the e-commerce store as a sampling tool, where customers who order from it can select 3 product samples to test. As with the other stores in the Edcon Group, Red Square awards points to customers who are members of the Thank U loyalty programme.

Red Square has a footprint of 49 stores countrywide.
