This cosmetics brand has existed for more than 180 years and is still going strong.
Rimmel is Britain’s biggest cosmetics brand. The brand has its origins in a London perfumery, where Eugene Rimmel worked as his French father’s apprentice in the family business called the House of Rimmel. By the time Eugene was 24-years-old, he was already an expert perfumer and had built up impressive knowledge in cosmetics. He opened his own store in Regent Street where he began to sell his own products. Eugene worked with his two sons, and by the time of his death in 1887, the business was a well-known fixture in London. The Rimmel brothers focused their attention on developing make-up that was focused on enhancing the eyes, with their mascara becoming particularly popular. The company was acquired by Robert and Rose Caplin after the Second World War. The couple had a background in advertising and used their experience to market the brand in innovative ways. Rimmel went through ups and downs throughout the 70s and 80s, with a number of changes in ownership. In 1996, the brand was bought by Coty, the fragrance and cosmetics multinational, which still owns it today.
Coty expanded Rimmel’s reach to 40 countries around the world. In South Africa, Rimmel is listed in major pharmacy retailers like Clicks and Dischem. Compared to higher end brands of makeup, Rimmel offers an affordable range aimed at its edgy and experimental consumers. Kate Moss, a native Londoner, has been the face of the brand since 2001 and has even launched her own range of lipsticks under the “Kate Moss for Rimmel” brand name. Rita Ora, Zooey Deschanel and Georgia May Jagger have also modelled for the brand.
“Rimmel” became a generic name for mascara in several languages.
