South Africa’s premier online retailer offering easy shopping from more than 20 departments.
Takealot is South Africa’s biggest online retailer and a leader in Africa. It was launched in 2011 when an existing online store, Take2 was acquired by a US-based investment firm, Tiger Global Management, and Kim Reid, Takelot’s current CEO. Kim drew inspiration from Amazon’s model of holding stock and rapid deliveries, which he believed was the ideal scenario for an e-commerce business to thrive. Following the launch of Takealot, the company’s staff increased from 25 people to 220 within a few months. The company’s focus is on delivering customer-centric service and a quality online shopping experience. The online store started with 6 departments when it launched and today has 21 departments selling a variety of electronic goods, books, health & beauty products, clothing, and more. As the company gained popularity, distribution warehouses were established in Johannesburg and Cape Town to meet growing demand and to improve its ability to serve customers faster.
In 2012, Takealot acquired Mr Delivery which allowed the company to launch a same-day and after-hours delivery service in major cities. Buying out Mr Delivery gave Takealot full control over its deliveries without needing to rely on courier companies who often don’t have the flexibility to keep up with the demands and rapidly-changing e-commerce landscape. 2014 also proved to be a significant year for the company as it received another round of funding from Tiger Global worth $100-million. The investment would be used to further build Takealot’s technology, logistics, and warehousing capabilities. In the same year, Takealot acquired Superbalist.com, an e-commerce site focused on fashion and apartment furnishings from more than 500 international and local designers. In 2015, Takealot and Kalahari.com merged, with the accounts of the latter being migrated to the Takealot platform.
Takealot was the first retailer to bring Black Friday to South Africa in 2012.
