Telkom has been serving South Africa since 1991 after the state-owned Department of Posts and Telecommunications was split into three entities, one being Telkom SA. Danie du Toi was the company’s first managing director. The company’s star product was the Venus telephone which boasted reduced maintenance costs. By 1993, Telkom had branched into cellular communication and won a bid for one of the first mobile network licenses in the country. The company is now led by CEO Sipho Maseko.
