Mr Price Home is a firm favourite in the South African home decor market.
Building on the success of the MrP apparel division, Mr Price Group launched a brand extension focusing on homeware. Mr Price Home (MrPHome) entered the South African market in 1998. It was started to bring the concept of contemporary home decor to the mass market at an affordable price. The store provides a broad range of furniture and decorative items for bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and living rooms, sold from large store formats, with the average outlet covering an estimated 806 square meters. MrP also sells its complete range from an online store, launched in 2013. Customers can choose to have their order delivered to their homes or a nearby store of their choice.
Although targeted at customers at a higher income level than MrP’s clothing stores, MrPHome remains an accessible homeware store when compared to the majority of retailers in this category. Its stores are designed to appeal to female shoppers, with considerable attention paid to showcasing the merchandise. There are currently 167 MrP stores throughout Africa, with 154 of these shops being in South Africa. The retailer also established a store in Australia in 2016. Within the Mr Price Group, the home division contributes R3.4-billion in revenue – or 18% to total sales – making it the second most strategic to the group after apparel. In the 20 years that MrPHome has been active in the market, the brand has become firmly established. In 2016’s Times Sowetan Shopper survey, the brand earned second place in the home accessories category and claimed the title of most loved South African homeware brand in Nielsen’s annual survey.
MrPHome sells in excess of 33 million units a year.
