A premium Italian-inspired restaurant that offers a comfortable atmosphere and tasty food.
Founded in October 1992, Col’Cacchio was started by Michael Terespolsky along with his business partner and wife, Kinga Baranowska with an investment of R100,000 and no prior restaurant experience. The couple’s first store opened in Foreshore in the Western Cape and achieved early success. A further two restaurants were opened in Bryanston and Bedfordview in 1996. Col’Cacchio offers a range of Italian-inspired dishes made with fresh, quality ingredients. Their offering is targeted at customers who seek delicious, but healthy food. The restaurant’s flagship product is their gourmet thin-crust pizzas. In a departure from the typical fast food pizza shops, Col’Cacchio’s restaurants are designed to be comfortable and casual. Everything from the pizza dough to salad dressings is made on-site to ensure maximum freshness. The menu includes over 50 pizzas of a standard 31cm size, as well as a variety of salads, pasta, and an extensive wine list.
In 2003, the company developed a franchising model to roll-out more stores. Today Col’Cacchio is still partly-owned by Michael, Kinga and a third partner, Gregg Mommsen, who bought a stake in the business in 2004. All three play an active role in day-to-day operations. There are currently 35 Col’Cacchio stores around South Africa and 1 store in Namibia. One of the restaurant’s most popular marketing initiatives is the Celebrity Chef Series, where leading chefs create a pizza that’s added to the restaurant’s menu for a month, with R5 from each sale being donated to the Children’s Hospital Trust.
Loosely translated, col’cacchio means “up yours” in Italian slang in a non-offensive and cheeky sense!
