Triumph Lingerie has been available in South Africa for almost 60 years.

Triumph is a brand of women’s underwear that was started by corsetier Johann Gottfried Spiesshofer and merchant Michael Braun. In 1886, the businessmen created a corsetry business that they named Spiesshofer & Braun. The company, located in the southern German town of Heubach, had six sewing machines and only six employees. In 1902, the entrepreneurs decided to change the name of the company to something that was easier to remember and better suited to their ambitions to grow the brand. They drew inspiration from the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and changed their brand name to Triumph. Within a few years, Triumph was the leading lingerie manufacturer in Europe. Following a stop in production due to World War II, Triumph resumed its business, introducing a number of innovations in the 1950s such as elasticated bra straps for added comfort. The company’s first stores outside Europe were in Asia in the 1960s. By 1965, the Triumph brand was available in 92 countries. Triumph currently employs approximately 37,000 workers worldwide and has an annual turnover of more than 2 billion Swiss francs globally. The business is still family-owned and over the years, has acquired other brands such as Sloggi – the highest-selling branded brief in the world – as well as HOM, a French brand of men’s underwear.

Triumph has been available in the South African market since 1960. The product range is targeted at middle-income customers and sold locally through retailers such as Stuttafords, Edgars, Foschini and Truworths. A local e-commerce platform was launched in July 2014. The products are imported; however, in 2013, the brand launched the locally-designed Seduction range. Triumph South Africa is headquartered in Montagu, Cape Town.

The Triumph brand is one of the oldest underwear brands in the world, with a history dating back 130 years.
